About Church of St Gregory, Stoke St Gregory
The Church of St Gregory at Stoke St Gregory, Taunton, is an active Church of England parish church and a Grade I listed building. It belongs to the Athelney Benefice, which also covers Anglican parishes at Burrowbridge, Lyng and North Curry.
Construction dates from around 1300, placing the church at the beginning of the 14th century. Its layout takes the form of a cross, centred on an eight-sided tower that was heightened during the 1400s. Four-bay arcades separate the nave from an aisle on each side. The southern porch has a sundial above the external opening and an image of Gregory the Great above the doorway within. Remnants of medieval glazing can be seen in the west windows of both aisles. The tower contains five bells, with dates ranging from 1628 to 1909. Historic churchyard features include old stocks, a monument possibly dating to the 1500s and a distinguished late-18th-century gravestone.
