About Worksop Priory

Worksop Priory stands on Cheapside in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, and serves as a Church of England parish church. Formally dedicated to Our Lady and Saint Cuthbert, it is within the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. Its Grade I designation recognises its exceptional historic and architectural significance.

William de Lovetot endowed an Augustinian house here in 1103. Following its closure by Henry VIII in 1539, much of the monastic complex was dismantled for building stone, although the nave continued to serve local worshippers. Richard Nicholson carried out extensive repairs in 1845–49, including reroofing and stabilising the southern tower. Harold Brakspear later renewed the long-ruined Lady Chapel, reopened in 1922 to commemorate parishioners who died during the First World War. Transepts were completed in 1929 and 1935. Lawrence King designed the present crossing tower, sanctuary and compact choir, constructed from 1970 to 1974, with an aluminium flèche and stained glass by John Hayward.
