About St Peter & St Paul
St Peter & St Paul is an active Church of England parish church on Church Street in Retford, Nottinghamshire. It belongs to the Clays Group of churches and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
The church has twelfth-century origins, although a fire destroyed the building in 1901. Charles Hodgson Fowler designed its reconstruction, which was completed and opened the following year. Six bells hang in a cast-iron frame made to accommodate eight: five were produced by Thomas II Mears in 1825, while John Taylor & Co cast the treble in 1991. Memorials include those to Lady Oliva de Montbegon, who died in 1236, and Dame Frances Earle, who died in 1687. A marble grave marker commemorates Francis Thornhagh, a Parliamentary commander killed during the Battle of Preston in 1648.
