About St Peter and St Paul's Church, North Wheatley

St Peter and St Paul's Church, North Wheatley, serves as an active Anglican parish church near Retford in Nottinghamshire. It belongs to the Church of England and is among the five places of worship forming the Clays Group. Its Grade II* designation recognises the building’s particular historic and architectural significance.

The earliest fabric is from the 1200s, with the tower following in about 1480. A new chancel was completed in 1824, and architect Charles Hodgson Fowler directed further renovation in 1896. Six bells hang together in an oak framework installed that year by Thomas Mallaby. The oldest pair were produced by Thomas Hilton in 1793, while the remaining bells date from 1896 and 1958. Structural instability prevented ringing for 32 years until work allowed the bells to sound again in 1958. An oak staircase, older than the Victorian period, provides access to the ringing room.
