About St John the Baptist

St John the Baptist stands in Clarborough, in the Retford area of Nottinghamshire. It serves as an Anglican parish church and is designated Grade I for its national heritage importance.

Clarborough had no recorded place of worship in the Domesday survey of 1086, but a church was present by 1103, when William de Lovetot granted half of its revenues. Although its origins are medieval, construction of the current church commenced in 1258. At that time, Archbishop Sewal de Bovil determined the vicar’s rights to offerings, land beside the burial ground and certain local tithes. The parish foundation followed in 1260, and the church and adjacent Manor Farm formed the heart of the settlement. James Fowler, an architect based in Louth, oversaw restoration work in 1874. The burial ground also contains an ancient yew, thought possibly to have stood for more than a millennium.
