About St Andrew's Church
St Andrew’s Church is a Church of England parish church in Langar, Nottinghamshire, in the Nottingham area. Dating from around 1250, it remains part of the Wiverton group of parishes. Its Grade I designation recognises its exceptional architectural and historical significance. The scale of the building, unusually large for its village setting, has led to its informal association with a cathedral.
A substantial restoration was undertaken by Thomas Butler in 1860. Inside are memorials to members of the Howe family, including Richard Howe, the first Earl Howe, as well as monuments connected with the Chaworth family of Wiverton Hall. The south transept houses an elaborate memorial to Thomas, Lord Scrope, his wife Philadelphia and their son Emanuel. The organ was transferred from St James’ Church in Codnor in 1906, having been enlarged there by Lloyd of Nottingham in 1876.
