About St Wilfrid
St Wilfrid is a Church of England parish church in North Muskham, in the Newark area of Nottinghamshire. It remains a parish church and holds Grade I listed status, recognising its exceptional architectural and historic importance. It also belongs to a united parish with churches at Averham, Kelham and South Muskham.
The medieval building dates from around 1250 and underwent restoration in 1906 and 1907. Its earliest surviving elements include the tower’s lower stage and the north arcade, whose octagonal supports may be among the first examples of their kind in Nottinghamshire. The south arcade is Perpendicular in style, while the nave has a clerestory beneath a timber roof. Other notable features include the chancel’s five-light east window, an intricately cusped screen and a pulpit thought to date from the late seventeenth century. The Barton family’s arms, including a bear-and-tun rebus, appear in several places.
