About St Nicholas
St Nicholas is a Church of England parish church in Newark, Nottinghamshire. It remains part of a parish group that also includes churches at Grove, East Markham and Headon-cum-Upton. The church is protected at Grade II*, a designation reflecting its particular architectural and historic significance beyond the immediate locality.
The building has medieval origins, with the southern part of the nave dating from the 12th century. A restoration was undertaken between 1906 and 1907. Among its notable features are three bells, mounted so that they remain stationary rather than swinging. They are supported by a steel framework and sounded externally by hammers.
