About St Michael and All Angels
St Michael and All Angels is an active Anglican parish church in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Built in about 1150, it now shares its parish arrangements with three churches dedicated to St Wilfrid in Kelham, North Muskham and South Muskham. The building is protected at Grade I for its exceptional historic and architectural significance.
Norman stonework remains visible across the chancel and nave, as well as within sections of the tower. The tower opening belongs to a subsequent phase, while its pinnacles and supporting buttresses were also added afterwards. The later southern porch displays lettering and heraldry associated with Sir Thomas Sutton, who died in 1525, and his wife. Interior details include an early Perpendicular screen of restrained design, Victorian glazing made by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, and older glass fragments recovered from Kelham Hall. Memorials include a medieval leaf-decorated cross, a worn figure of a layman and a wall tablet commemorating Robert Sutton, first Baron Lexinton, who died in 1668.
