About St. Leonard's Church
St. Leonard’s Church is a Church of England parish church in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Now based on Lincoln Road, it continues in its parochial role in the town.
Its predecessor was erected on Northgate to plans by the Nottingham architectural practice of Evans and Jolly. Completed at a cost of £4,000, it was formally consecrated on 28 January 1873 by Lincoln’s bishop, Christopher Wordsworth. A. H. Skipworth created its three-panelled reredos, which used alabaster figures to portray scenes of the Annunciation and Christ’s death on the cross. The present building replaced that Victorian church in 1978. Architect Gordon Smith drew up the scheme, and the Bishop of Southwell conducted the dedication on 5 November. Items from the former interior were sold, while the reredos later went to the Catholic church of Our Lady and St Benedict at Wootton Wawen.
