About St Giles
St Giles is a Church of England parish church in Holme, in the Newark area of Nottinghamshire. Dating from the medieval period, it remains a parish church and is protected as a Grade I listed building, recognising its exceptional historic and architectural importance.
The church originated in the twelfth century, with a date of about 1150, and John Barton was responsible for rebuilding much of it during the early fifteenth century. Barton, a wealthy merchant in the wool trade who died in 1491, commissioned his own monument while still alive. This notable cadaver tomb pairs his likeness with a reminder of mortality beneath it. A visual play on his surname appears by his feet: a barrel, or tun, crossed by a bar. His connection to the wool trade was also represented through imagery associated with sheep at his former home.
