About Elston Old Chapel
Elston Old Chapel is a former Church of England parish church near Newark, standing in a field to the north-east of Elston village in Nottinghamshire. No longer used for regular worship, the church is a Grade I listed building and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Dating from the 12th century, the church was altered and extended during the 14th and 16th centuries. It became an independent parish in 1584 and was later attached to East Stoke as a chapelry. The building has walls of coursed rubble stone, tiled roofs, a nave and a lower, narrower chancel. Its Norman south entrance has a rounded arch with zigzag ornament. Other notable features include ogee-headed windows, chancel buttresses, the date 1577 above the east window and part of a cross at the gable peak. Inside are remains of 19th-century fittings, several layers of wall painting, Georgian biblical inscriptions and a large royal coat of arms.
