About All Saints' Church, Winthorpe
All Saints' Church, Winthorpe serves an Anglican parish near Newark in Nottinghamshire and belongs to the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. The present church dates from 1888 and has Grade II protection.
Christian worship on this site can be traced to the thirteenth century or earlier. An earlier church suffered serious harm during the Civil War, while its post-war successor later required a replacement after becoming dilapidated. Rector Edward Handley commissioned the present structure as a memorial to a family member. Designed in the Gothic style by Sidney Gambier-Parry, it was erected from 1886 to 1888 by Newark builders Mackenzie & Sons. Its fabric combines Walkeringham red brick with Ancaster stone detailing outside and red Mansfield stone within. Distinctive features include a tower at the north-west corner, a brick spire, an apsidal baptistry and lancet openings. Stained glass was supplied by Heaton, Butler and Bayne. Three bells were transferred from the former building, and the eventual peal numbered six.
