About St Olave's Church, York
St Olave’s Church, York is an active Church of England parish church on Marygate, beside the remains of St Mary’s Abbey. Standing within the former abbey precinct, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. The parish follows a liberal Anglo-Catholic tradition, while music remains central to its worship through a choir, organ and six bells used for change ringing.
Dedicated to St Olaf of Norway, the church has origins extending back to at least 1055, when Earl Siward of Northumbria was buried there. The present building dates largely from the 15th century, following extensive rebuilding around the period indicated by its 1401 date. Repairs in the 1720s included new north aisle windows. Further restoration took place in 1848–49 and again from 1887, when plaster and paint were removed from several medieval surfaces. George Fowler Jones designed a new chancel, later enlarged in 1906, incorporating a five-light east window from the 15th century. The pipe organ was made by J. W. Walker & Sons in 1907.
