About St Michael le Belfrey

St Michael le Belfrey is a Church of England parish church in central York, North Yorkshire. Standing on Minster Yard beside High Petergate and facing York Minster, it remains an active place of worship, with services on Sundays at 9.00 am and Wednesdays at 12.30 pm. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.

The current structure was erected from 1525 to 1537, replacing an earlier church recorded by 1294. Medieval glass from that building survives in the eastern window. Guy Fawkes was baptised here in 1570, while explorer Christopher Levett married Mercy More at the church in 1608. Inside are John Etty’s Baroque reredos and altar rails from 1702, carved seventeenth-century benches, eighteenth-century memorials and galleries designed around 1785 by William Belwood. George Fowler Jones oversaw the addition of the western frontage and bellcote in 1867 and also designed Victorian seating. The large 1885 organ by York builder William Denman was removed for restoration and transferred to St Lawrence’s Church in 2020.
