About St. Mary's Church

St. Mary’s Church is a Church of England parish church on Bishophill Junior in York, North Yorkshire. It serves in a shared parish with All Saints’ Church on North Street and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Founded in the tenth century, the church retains a tower incorporating reused Roman masonry. The tower was raised during the following century, probably in the period before the Norman Conquest, while its battlements date to about 1411. The nave is eleventh-century, with a northern aisle and arcade from the twelfth century, and the chancel was built in the thirteenth century. Its font and bells are medieval. J. B. and W. Atkinson carried out substantial restoration in 1860–61, including raising the floor, replacing the porch and exposing the timber roof. Ewan Christian renovated the chancel, while Temple Lushington Moore added the pulpit and reredos in 1889. The present pipe organ, made by William Denman in 1864, was installed in 1986.
