About St Lawrence Church

St Lawrence Church is an active Anglican parish church on Lawrence Street, close to Walmgate Bar in York. The Grade II listed building follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition and uses the Book of Common Prayer in its worship.

The present church was constructed between 1881 and 1883, replacing a smaller building and becoming York’s largest place of worship after the Minster. Its spire and illuminated clock followed in the early 1890s. A surviving medieval tower stands in the churchyard, with a doorway and lower section dating from the twelfth century. Inside are an ornate font from around 1400, stained glass by the Knowles family and Joan Fulleylove’s distinctive 1929 memorial window, which includes scenes of the Somme and York. Robert Thompson later redesigned the chancel as a memorial to the Second World War. Eight bells were installed for millennium change ringing in 1999, while an organ formerly at St Michael-le-Belfrey arrived in 2020.
