St James the Deacon stands on Sherringham Drive in Acomb, York, North Yorkshire. It remains an Anglican parish church and is the sole church known to bear a dedication to James the Deacon.
Christian worship on Acomb Moor began with a mission building in 1952, when the district formed part of St Stephen’s parish. A separate parish followed in 1968. George Pace drew up the plans for the current church; work commenced the next year, and its consecration took place in 1971. The roof has uneven slopes and reaches its highest line above the sanctuary. Beside the entrance hall is a chapel for weekday use, covered by a single-slope roof and topped with a small bell structure. Older elements brought from elsewhere include a Norman-era doorway formerly at St Maurice’s, a medieval font from St Sampson’s, and a fourteenth-century altar slab originating at York Minster. Seventeenth-century timber figures representing the Evangelists are among the additional reused furnishings.
