About Church of St Peter
The Church of St Peter is a Church of England parish church in Conisbrough, Doncaster, South Yorkshire. It remains notable for its early origins and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Its oldest fabric is thought to date from the eighth century, with substantial early masonry surviving in the nave and tower, alongside windows that were subsequently sealed. A fragment of a tenth-century stone cross has also been found. Aisles were introduced during the twelfth century, when the chancel arch, southern doorway and a carved tomb chest were created. The building was altered again in the fourteenth century, while the fifteenth century brought a new facing to the tower, a clerestory, porch and several windows. The northern aisle was reconstructed in 1866 as part of wider Victorian restoration work, and the porch underwent further repairs during the twentieth century.
