About St Helen Stonegate
St Helen Stonegate is a Church of England parish church in St Helen’s Square, York. It remains in use and shares a parish with St Martin le Grand. The church is recognised as a Grade II* listed building.
Originating in the 14th century, the church was made redundant in 1551 and partly pulled down, but it survived and subsequently returned to worship. W. H. Dykes oversaw extensive reconstruction in 1857–58, including rebuilding three walls, renewing the roof and enlarging the chancel by 10 feet. Open seating replaced the pews, while gas lamps were added throughout. W. Atkinson of York rebuilt the tower in 1875–76. Several memorials survive, including those to Elizabeth Acklam, Barbara and Elizabeth Davyes, and members of the Atkinson family. The pipe organ was made by J. W. Walker & Sons in 1959.
