About St. Everilda's Church
St. Everilda’s Church is a Church of England parish church on Church Lane in Nether Poppleton, immediately north-west of York. One of just two English churches dedicated to the Anglo-Saxon saint Everilda, it now shares a parish with All Saints’ Church in Upper Poppleton. It belongs to the Diocese and Archdeaconry of York and has held Grade II* listed status since 1966.
A church stood here by 1088, when patronage rights passed to St Mary’s Abbey in York. The present limestone building largely dates from a 12th-century rebuilding and combines dressed stone with rubble masonry. Galleries were installed along the nave’s northern and western sides in 1778, when brickwork replaced part of the north wall. Later changes were made during the 19th century. Notable features include medieval glass from the 14th century, three Hutton family memorials dating from the 1600s, a probable 13th-century carved cross, and a 1939 altar by Robert Thompson.
