About Our Lady of Doncaster
In Doncaster, South Yorkshire, Our Lady of Doncaster is a shrine dedicated to Mary. The present shrine has stood inside St Peter-in-Chains Church since 1973, and its annual feast falls on 4 June. It continues a local tradition that began at the town’s medieval Carmelite friary.
The friary was established in the fourteenth century in the Hall Gate area, with land granted to the Carmelites in 1350 for a church and accommodation. Its position on the route between London and Scotland helped make the house and shrine significant. Medieval visitors included Henry IV, Edward IV, Henry VII and Margaret Tudor. Gifts included jewellery, clothing, candles and devotional objects. The original image was lost during the Reformation, while the modern shrine was created more than four centuries later.
