About St Edward the Confessor
St Edward the Confessor is a Church of England church in Dringhouses, York, North Yorkshire. The present building has been protected at Grade II since 1983.
Construction began in 1847 and was completed in 1849 to plans by Vickers and Hugall, replacing an earlier chapel nearby. Built from limestone beneath green slate, the church comprises a nave of four bays, a lower chancel and a porch on the north side. Its western gable carries a diagonally positioned bell turret with a clock and pointed openings. A figure of Edward the Confessor stands at the porch. Interior features include painted and gilded decoration, Minton floor tiles, stained glass by William Wailes, an octagonal stone font and pulpit, wooden seating and choir stalls. The organ dates from 1868, while the vestry contains an 1800 marble memorial to Samuel Francis Barlow, transferred from the former chapel.
