About St Chad's Church
St Chad's Church is a Roman Catholic church in York, North Yorkshire. Dedicated to Saint Chad and Our Lady, it has longstanding links with Ampleforth Abbey, whose clergy served the congregation for many years.
Catholic worship began locally in 1859, with Mass celebrated in a private house. A former joiner’s workshop became a church in 1867 and later also accommodated a school. Land for the present building was given by William Duncombe, 1st Earl of Feversham, and Bernard Smith designed the neo-Gothic church, which opened in June 1897 and was consecrated in 1947. Constructed in stone beneath a slate roof, it includes a nave, chancel, sacristy and southern porch, with a western bellcote, lancet windows and stepped buttresses. The stone altar dates from 1947, while the reredos incorporates seventeenth-century wooden panels brought from Gilling Castle. Benches made to designs from Robert Thompson’s workshop arrived during the 1960s.
