About Church of St Mary

The Church of St Mary is the Church of England parish church serving Riccall, near York in North Yorkshire. It remains an active place of worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1966.

Its earliest surviving fabric comprises the western section of the nave, dating from the middle or later 12th century. The west tower followed around 1200, while the arcades, chancel and northern chapel were added during the 13th century. Built from Magnesian limestone beneath Welsh slate, the church has a five-bay aisled nave and a two-bay chancel. John Loughborough Pearson carried out extensive restoration between 1862 and 1877, including rebuilding and raising the tower. The richly carved south entrance dates from the 1150s. Interior features include a late medieval memorial brass, two Baroque tablets, a 17th-century communion rail and George III’s arms painted in 1792.
