About St Barnabas
St Barnabas is a Church of England parish church on Jubilee Terrace in the Leeman Road district of York, North Yorkshire. The neighbourhood grew during the later nineteenth century to accommodate railway employees and was linked with Holgate.
Mission work began in a timber structure around 1877, before moving to a room in a school completed in 1886. Construction of the present church commenced in 1902, and its consecration took place on 12 March 1904. Charles Hornsey and Thomas Monkman created the Gothic Revival design, which cost approximately £4,000. Initially serving St Paul’s in Holgate, the church became the centre of a separate parish in 1912. Built in red brick, it has an aisled nave, chancel, twin western porches and a modest bellcote. Most pews were removed in 2023 to allow more adaptable use of the interior.
