About St Aidan's Church
St Aidan’s Church in York, North Yorkshire, is a former Anglican place of worship and a Grade II* listed building. It ceased religious use around 2001 and was adapted as holiday accommodation in 2012 by architect Jonathan Lindh, with a dark zinc-clad addition.
Temple Moore designed the church in an Early English Gothic manner for construction from 1884 to 1887. His first independent commission, it was completed for £530. Sandstone walls and tiled roofing enclose the nave and chancel, while a porch stands to the south and a square tower rises at the west end. The tower features slender pointed windows, quatrefoil openings, a pyramid-shaped roof and a cross. Internally, painted stencilwork decorates the curved timber ceiling. Surviving details include commemorative First World War glazing, stepped parquet floors, wooden seating, the altar, chancel screen, prayer-book cupboard and stone font, all designed by Moore.
