About Church of the Holy Redeemer
The Church of the Holy Redeemer is a Church of England place of worship at 108 Boroughbridge Road, Acomb, York, in North Yorkshire. It was added to the statutory list at Grade II in 1998 and remains notable for combining post-war design with much older architectural elements.
A modest brick church opened on the site in 1938; it later became the hall adjoining its successor. George Pace designed the present church, which took shape between 1959 and 1965. Masonry and medieval features rescued from the lost St Mary, Bishophill Senior, were incorporated into its southern side, while brick was used elsewhere. Historic fittings include a Romanesque entrance, sections of arcade dating from around 1200 and the later 1200s, and several Anglo-Saxon stone carvings set into the pulpit and fabric. One carved fragment is mounted within the metal cross over the altar. A brick clock tower stands above a compact chapel created for weekday worship.
