About Church of St Michael

The Church of St Michael is a Church of England place of worship in York, North Yorkshire. It has been protected at Grade II* since 1955, recognising its particular architectural and historic importance.

Christian worship on the site can be traced to Saxon times, represented by an inscribed sundial positioned over the principal entrance. The nave, dating to the 13th century, is the earliest surviving section of the present structure. Its chancel was reconstructed during the 18th century, while C. Hodgson Fowler oversaw restoration work in 1898 and 1899. Limestone walls and slate roofing enclose a unified nave and chancel, with a wooden bellcote rising from the western gable. Notable furnishings include a Norman font on a sculpted base, bells made in the 14th century and an altar rail from the 16th century. A lancet opening at the west end holds Victorian stained glass.
