About Church of St Michael
The Church of St Michael is a Church of England parish church in York, North Yorkshire. It is protected at Grade I, a designation granted in 1954, and serves the parish of Barton-le-Street.
A place of worship was recorded here in the Domesday survey, with a later church constructed around the 1160s. Perkin and Son rebuilt it fully in 1871, retaining the medieval footprint and incorporating nearly all the earlier carved stonework. Built from limestone beneath a slate roof, the church has a four-bay nave, two-bay chancel, north porch and western bellcote. Much of the interior sculpture is medieval and includes the Magi’s adoration and depictions of seasonal work, with noticeable Anglo-Scandinavian influence. Other features include a medieval piscina, stained glass by Barnett & Son and Heaton, Butler and Bayne, an organ case by Temple Moore, and a First World War memorial triptych.
