About Church of St Mary, Carlton

The Church of St Mary, Carlton is an active Roman Catholic parish church in Carlton, Goole, North Yorkshire. It has been protected at Grade II* since 1993, reflecting its particular architectural and historic importance. A presbytery, built in 1842, adjoins the church through a connecting brick passage.

Catholics formerly worshipped in a chapel at Carlton Towers. After inheriting the estate in 1839, Miles Stapleton commissioned M. E. Hadfield to design a new village church. Building began in June 1841, and worship commenced there on 31 August 1842. Constructed in pale brick, with masonry detailing and roofs covered in Welsh slate, it comprises a nave, south porch, chancel and northern vestry. Features include a gabled bellcote, an east window of three lights and a sheltered niche above it. The original pews survive, together with three chancel chairs by Robert Thompson. Weightman & Brown restored the building during the 1980s, before the sanctuary was reordered and refurnished in 1992.
