About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is a Church of England place of worship in the York area of North Yorkshire, serving Carlton Husthwaite. Dating from the 17th century, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building, a designation granted in 1960.
Probably finished in 1677, the church originated as a subsidiary chapel for St Nicholas’ Church in Husthwaite. Built in sandstone with gritstone detailing and a Welsh slate covering, it combines the nave and chancel beneath one roof, with a three-stage tower at the western end. Alterations included an east window during the 18th century, a modest heating chamber in the 19th century and restoration in 1885. Much of the interior woodwork dates from the 1600s, including seating, a reading desk and a canopied pulpit marked 1678. Two bells cast in York by S. Smith bear the date 1677.
