About Micklegate Methodist Church
Micklegate Methodist Church occupies a site on Micklegate, east of Pontefract’s centre and close to the castle. Once a place of worship within the Methodist Church of Great Britain, it was one of the town’s two Methodist churches. The church closed in August 2024.
Methodist worship on the site can be traced to 1854. An earlier nineteenth-century chapel, Tanshelf Primitive Methodist Church, was a two-level red-brick building with a gabled frontage. It was destroyed in a deliberate fire in 1965, though no one was hurt. The replacement church began use on 8 September 1969. Its modernist design comprises two floors, a glazed south-facing gable, paired doors beneath a canopy, and a substantial cross on the western face. A memorial honouring local men who died during the First World War was recovered from the former chapel and installed inside.
