About Church of St Mary Magdalene
The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a Church of England parish church in York, North Yorkshire. It remains in use as a parish church and has held Grade II* listed status since 1960.
The nave and chancel date from the 12th century, while the chancel’s eastern wall was reconstructed during the following century. Later changes included a new chancel roof in the 1600s, an 18th-century south porch, the rebuilding of the western tower in 1822 and a northern vestry around 1900. Brierley, Syme and Leckenby restored the building in 1955. Its main walls are sandstone, the tower is brick and the roofs are covered with Welsh slate. Interior features include a medieval grave slab, a 14th-century eight-sided font, Victorian seating and a stone holy-water basin. Stained glass by Charles Eamer Kempe fills the east window, while another chancel window contains medieval glass moved there in 1952.
