About St. Giles

St. Giles is an active Church of England parish church in Market Place, Pontefract, West Yorkshire. It belongs to the Diocese of Leeds and the Leeds archdeaconry. One of two Anglican churches in Pontefract town centre, it has shared a benefice with All Saints’ since June 2019. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building, a designation granted in 1950.

Largely rebuilt during the early 1700s, with further work later that century, the church is constructed from ashlar gritstone and sandstone beneath slate and lead roofing. Its nave and chancel share a single roofline, while seven bays contain rounded windows. Thomas Atkinson designed the three-stage, octagonal bell tower, which was reconstructed in 1786 and carries clock faces on two sides. Inside are Doric columns with lion-mask ornament, royal arms associated with George I, and an 1879 east window by C. E. Kempe showing the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension. The present organ dates from 1894 and was rebuilt in 2003.
