About St John the Evangelist

St John the Evangelist is an active Church of England parish church in Carlton in Lindrick, Worksop, Nottinghamshire. It is protected as a Grade I listed building and shares a parish with St Luke’s Church in Langold and St Mark’s Church in Oldcotes. The parish belongs to the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham.

Founded during the seventh century, the church is among Nottinghamshire’s oldest Christian foundations. Its tower dates to the early Norman era, while the arches leading into the tower and chancel are also Norman work. The northern arcade represents the transition from Norman architecture, and the southern arcade was later designed to match it. Notable fittings include a font from the Norman period and an alabaster sculpture dating from the fifteenth century. In 1851, a clock that had been out of use for more than two decades was replaced by a mechanism made by Whitehurst of Derby and given by Robert Ramsden.
