About Church of St John
The Church of St John is an Anglican place of worship at Acaster Selby, near York in North Yorkshire. The building received Grade II protection in 1978. Although originally assigned an independent parish, it became part of the adjoining Appleton Roebuck parish in 1875, when All Saints took the role of parish church.
John Loughborough Pearson designed the church, which opened in 1850 and honours John the Evangelist. Its creation was prompted by an 1833 tragedy in which eleven choristers died crossing the Ouse to worship at Stillingfleet. Pearson used the Gothic Revival manner, combining sandstone walls, pale limestone details and roof tiles. The plan comprises a nave of four bays, a southern entrance porch, a two-bay sanctuary and a vestry on the north-east side. A small bell structure rises above the west end. Many windows contain paired lights with Decorated Gothic tracery. Nineteenth-century features include the font and surviving early stained glass, among it a window by Mayer and Co.
