About Church of All Saints, Aston cum Aughton
The Church of All Saints, Aston cum Aughton is a Church of England parish church in Aston, within Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Part of the Diocese of Sheffield, it remains the parish church for Aston cum Aughton and is listed at Grade I for its architectural and historic significance.
Although worship took place on the site by 1086, the present church originated in the later 12th century. Constructed from red sandstone and dressed limestone, with roofs of lead and Welsh slate, it combines Gothic and Perpendicular elements. Its plan includes a western tower, aisled nave, southern porch, chancel and chapel. Extensive alterations followed during the late medieval period, while the chancel was reconstructed in the 19th century and renovated by Matthew Ellison Hadfield in 1863. Notable features include a font dating from about 1400, medieval Darcy stained glass, tombs belonging to the Darcy and Melton families, and Giovanni Bastianini’s marble relief of the Virgin and Child.
