About Church of St. Denys
The Church of St. Denys is a Church of England parish church on St Denys Road in York, North Yorkshire. Dedicated to the French saint Denys, it is one of fewer than 40 churches in England bearing his name. The church remains a parish place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Built on the location of an earlier Saxon church, and possibly a Roman temple, the church has records reaching back to about 1154. Much of the present building dates from around 1350. Notable features include a carved Norman entrance, a heraldic roof from the 15th century and some of York’s oldest stained glass. St Denys appears in the east window. Subsidence reduced the building’s original size, while its former spire was damaged by cannon fire, lightning and wind before removal. Rebuilding took place in 1798, followed by major alterations in 1846–47 under Thomas Pickersgill. The organ, installed in 2017–18, was made by Father Willis in 1879.
