About Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints is a Church of England church in York, North Yorkshire. Dating in part from the eleventh century, it has been protected as a Grade II* listed building since 1954.
The surviving tower is the oldest section, while Rohde Hawkins reconstructed most of the church in 1860 using forms inspired by thirteenth-century architecture. Limestone walls and Westmorland slate roofing enclose a nave with two aisles, a chancel, vestry and south porch. The three-level western tower incorporates early carved crosses, narrow openings, paired bell apertures and a clock. Norman doorways also survive. Inside, a heavily weathered stone panel carved around AD 800 serves as the reredos. Its design shows eight people beneath arches, with birds and scrolling foliage below. The tower received a replacement roof at about 1970.
