About Church of All Saints And St James, Nunnington
The Church of All Saints and St James is the Church of England parish church for Nunnington, near York in North Yorkshire. It remains an active place of parish worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1955.
Historic England dates the nave and chancel to the later 13th century, although the nave may incorporate earlier, 12th-century work. Constructed from stone and roofed with stone flags, the church comprises a nave, south porch, chancel, vestry, organ chamber and western tower. The tower was reconstructed in 1672, while the vestry and organ chamber date from around 1824. Ewan Christian directed a restoration in 1883–84, renewing the roof, porch and tower arch. Notable fittings include a 17th-century pulpit and font, alongside a screen and lectern carved by Robert Thompson. Two carved stones survive from the 10th century, including one showing a dragon. The oldest monument is an effigy from about 1325, thought to represent Walter de Teye.
