About St Wilfrid

St Wilfrid is the Church of England parish church of South Kilvington, situated on Beck Lane in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. The church remains notable for its medieval fabric and has been protected as a Grade II* listed building since 1966.

Built during the 12th century, the stone church is partly rendered and covered by a Welsh slate roof. Its plan comprises a nave, chancel and southern porch, while a timber-shingled bell tower at the western end has a pyramidal roof and weathervane. Norman windows survive in the nave and chancel, alongside a modified doorway from the same period. Most other windows were renewed in the 13th century, with the three-light eastern window probably added in the 14th. Extensive restoration during the 19th century included construction of the porch. Inside are a hexagonal black marble font from the 15th century, several medieval bench ends and pews carved by the Revd W. T. Kingsley.
