About Church of All Saints, Ledsham
The Church of All Saints, Ledsham is a Church of England parish church in Ledsham, West Yorkshire, about ten miles east of Leeds. It serves the parish of Ledsham with Fairburn and belongs to the Diocese of York. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building and stands within the Ledsham Conservation Area.
Although the building is dated to 1450, parts of its fabric may survive from the Anglo-Saxon era, possibly as early as the eighth century. Local sandstone and dolomitic limestone were used in its construction. The west tower combines a Saxon base, Norman bell stage and Perpendicular upper section, while the nave’s south wall also retains early masonry. Larger windows were inserted during the fifteenth century. A restoration in 1871 introduced mainly oak fittings and a new font. Notable monuments commemorate Dame Mary Bolles and the benefactor Lady Elizabeth Hastings, whose tomb was designed by Peter Scheemakers. Abbott and Smith installed the organ in 1881.
