About Saint Marys
Saint Marys stands on Kirkgate in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, and serves as an active Anglican parish church. It belongs to the Benefice of Thirsk, alongside churches at South Kilvington, Carlton Miniott and Sandhutton. Dating to the fifteenth century, the building has Grade I listed status.
The church was built in 1401 and its southern porch was renewed in 1857. George Edmund Street directed substantial restoration work twenty years later, after which worship resumed in October 1877. Heraldic glass documented during those works displayed symbols connected with the English and French crowns, several local families, and Sir James Strangways with his wife Elizabeth. Andrew Wood constructed a pipe organ in 1813; later work increased and refurbished the instrument. Four bells were recorded in the tower in 1859, including one from around 1410. Further additions eventually produced a ring of eight, and the sixth was recast in 1926.
