About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is an Anglican parish church serving Thorpe Willoughby in North Yorkshire. Established as an independent parish in 1915, it continues in its parochial role today. The church was added to the statutory list at Grade II in 2021.
The present building dates from 1882, when it opened as a subsidiary place of worship. John Loughborough Pearson created its Gothic Revival design, drawing on the Decorated tradition. Constructed in brick of a deep red colour, it has pale masonry trim and roofing of red tiles. Its plan includes a central nave, aisles, chancel, porch and vestry. A wooden bell turret stands over the west end, with quatrefoil-shaped openings, a shingled pyramidal cap and metal cross. The organ arrived in 1885, and changes made during 1949 provided space for a chapel and vestry. Notable fittings include a transferred font, pine benches, George Walker Milburn’s carved oak decoration in the chancel, and a 1920 memorial window designed by Christopher Whall.
