About St Cuthbert
St Cuthbert is the Church of England parish church serving Sessay, at Church Lane in the Thirsk area of North Yorkshire. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building, a designation granted in 1988.
Sessay had a place of worship from Norman times, but that earlier structure was taken down during the 1840s. Its successor was erected in 1847 and 1848 to plans by William Butterfield, with funding from William Dawnay, the seventh Viscount Downe. Further work was carried out in 1883. The fabric is stone, while stone slates cover the roof. The layout includes the main worship space, a southern aisle and entrance porch, the chancel, a vestry on the north side and a steeple at the western end. A two-level tower supports a shingle-covered spire crowned by a weathercock. Noteworthy furnishings include a font with eight sides and a memorial brass for Walter Thomas Magnus, who served as Archdeacon of the North Riding and died in 1550.
