About Immaculate Conception and St John of Beverley
Immaculate Conception and St John of Beverley stands on Lakeside at Scarthingwell, North Yorkshire. It serves as a Roman Catholic place of worship and received Grade II designation in 1988. The building formerly belonged to the Scarthingwell Hall estate and continued in church use after the house was removed.
Dating from 1854, the chapel was commissioned for Scarthingwell Hall by Edward William Hawke-Harvey, the fourth Baron Hawke. Architects John Bownas and William Atkinson created a Norman Revival building in limestone, roofed with slate. It was the earliest English church named for the Immaculate Conception. Its plan comprises a nave and a curved-ended sanctuary, while the western gable incorporates four recessed niches and a compact masonry turret. Tall paired-light openings illuminate the nave, and seven slender lancets line the sanctuary. Decorative interior plasterwork survives, together with a timber gallery approached by stairs. Once used as the Hawke family’s seating area, the gallery now accommodates the organ.
