About Our Lady Star of the Sea
Our Lady Star of the Sea is a Roman Catholic church at 32 Staithes Lane in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire. Before its construction, Catholics from Staithes attended services in either Ugthorpe or Loftus. A priest began living locally in 1895, ten years after the building was completed.
Martin Carr designed the church in the Gothic Revival manner, and construction took place during 1884 and 1885 at a cost of roughly £1,250. Sandstone was used for the walls, with Welsh slate covering the roof. The nave and sanctuary share one uninterrupted interior, approximately 21 metres long and 7.6 metres wide. Its western porch is surmounted by A. B. Wall’s sculpture depicting Mary and the infant Jesus aboard the prow of a vessel. Higher on the façade are a round window and a substantial bellcote. Original benches remain inside, together with a Gothic pulpit and altar. Stained glass added around 1973 is also present, while an adjoining presbytery may have been built at the same time or soon afterwards.
