About Church of St Peter the Fisherman
The Church of St Peter the Fisherman is an Anglican place of worship in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire. It received Grade II designation in 1973. Worship is still held monthly in the upstairs space, while a community organisation leases the premises as St Peter’s Centre and uses the ground-floor room for local activities.
William Weatherill commissioned the property as his residence in 1802. After his death in 1847, it was adapted for educational use, then approved for Anglican services two years later. In 1874, it took on the role of a mission church and was placed under the patronage of Saint Peter as a fisherman. Clergy could use the adjoining dwelling, although the vicar based at St Hilda’s, Hinderwell, continued to oversee it. Raised above a stone base, the structure has masonry walls and a clay-tiled roof finished with stone edging. Architectural details include sash windows, a closed-up arched opening, an undercroft and a bell housing above the connecting porch.
