About Coneysthorpe Chapel
Coneysthorpe Chapel is a historic Church of England place of worship on The Green in Coneysthorpe, York, North Yorkshire. It is protected as a Grade II listed building, a designation granted in 1954.
Built in 1835 to serve as a chapel of ease for St Michael’s Church at Barton-le-Street, the church is Georgian in character. Its limestone walls stand on a plinth beneath a Welsh slate roof. Architectural details include corner quoins, a pediment and a rooftop bell turret crowned by a dome, ball finial and weathervane. Temple Moore designed the interior fittings in 1894, including the seating, lectern, altar rail and reredos. An eight-sided font is another notable feature. In 2010, the chapel marked 175 years since its construction by restoring a Lammas Day custom centred on a feast of bread.
